Train to you Machu Picchu Vacation Package

Choosing your train to get to Machu Picchu is important. Depending on your needs, you need to know which train to choose. Each train option is available; if you don’t want something too expensive, the Expedition or Voyager are the best options.

On the other hand, if you want a more cultural experience, the Observatory and Vistadome are the best options. However, nothing beats the Hiram Bingham when it comes to luxury trains; from the gastronomy to the show to the cocktails, it’s an impeccable experience.

The interior of the expedition train

An affordable and convenient way to get to Machu Picchu. Panoramic views and large windows, the best value for money.

The interior of the vistadome train

Panoramic train, very large windows, glass ceilings, and onboard shows. This train offers refreshments, Peruvian dance, modeling, and more, providing a complete experience.

The interior of the vistadome observatory train

Fresh air and breezes, 360° landscapes, live dancing, snacks, comfortable furniture, an experience to reach Machu Picchu.

Hiram-Bingham-train-inside

Machu Picchu Weather & Best time to Book your Machu Picchu Vacation Package

Before booking your Machu Picchu tour, it’s essential to understand the climate. Machu Picchu elevation is 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level. Weather conditions vary between the dry season and the rainy season. Here’s some quick information about this.

Dry Season (May to October)

Wet Season (Nov to April)

Shoulder Season (April and October)

This is the most popular time for travelers to go on a Machu Picchu tour, due to the clear skies and dry weather. However, it is the busiest time of year, especially from June to August.

This season isn’t the best time to visit Machu Picchu. There aren’t many crowds, and the rains create a beautiful green landscape. However, you’ll have to deal with some rain, so you should prepare with warm clothing.

These months are among the best times to visit Machu Picchu. It offers the best of both seasons, with generally dry weather and fewer crowds than during peak season.

Machu Picchu Tickets & Entrey types

To visit Machu Picchu, it’s very important to keep in mind that you must purchase your entrance tickets to this Wonder of the World in advance. This is because space is limited. There are several types of tickets available, so you should be aware of which one to purchase based on your convenience and availability. Here, we briefly explain everything you need to know.

Where buy the tickets

Circuit 1,2 y 3

Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu or
Machu Picchu Mountain

Travel Agency: This option is ideal if you don’t want any complications. Travel agencies do all the work for you. We’ll purchase your tickets and inform you of availability.

Online: The safest option is to check availability and purchase your tickets to Machu Picchu, or if you’d like to explore an optional hike like Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, through the official Peruvian government website. Information is also posted here when there are complications or tickets are closed.

In Person: You can purchase it through the Ministry of Culture or in Aguas Calientes. Remember that it’s not recommended to buy it once you’re already in the citadel, as tickets are booked in advance due to availability.

Circuit 1,2 y 3

Circuit 1: It’s characterized by panoramic views, contains four main routes, and this is the circuit that takes you to Machu Picchu Mountain, the highest point of Machu Picchu. It requires moderate physical effort, but it’s worth it.

Circuit 2: This is the most popular and best-selling tour. It includes two routes that will take you through the entire urban area, including its main attractions and facilities. Its physical effort is moderate to low.

Circuit 3: This circuit is where you’ll explore the most sacred sites of Machu Picchu. It comprises four routes and requires moderate to vigorous physical exertion. This circuit includes Huayna Picchu and Huchuy Picchu.

Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu or
Machu Picchu Mountain

These routes are alternative hikes you can take within Machu Picchu for an additional fee (don’t forget to ask your sales representative when booking). Both require a slightly higher level of physical effort but are worth it due to the incredible views and different panoramas they offer, in addition to the classic Machu Picchu photo op.

Huayna Picchu: Huayna Picchu: This is a steep hike that takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and appears in the classic photo of Machu Picchu. Daily admission is limited to 300 people, and the additional cost usually ranges between $55 and $60. The famous “Stairs of Death” are located here, but it’s totally worth it for the impressive and unique view you’ll have of the world wonder of Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu Mountain: Here you will find the highest peak in all of Machu Picchu, which even surpasses Huayna Picchu. A hike of approximately two hours will take you south of Machu Picchu, where you will have another type of higher view of the Inca citadel. The effort is a little greater than that of Machu Picchu, but it is worth it.

What to Excpect in your Machu Picchu Vacation Package

  • Discover one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu, and enjoy the whole experience.
  • Connect with Inca architecture and perceive how the Incas lived in those years
  • Discover the “Intihuatana Stone“. This rock is used for ceremonial purposes and also as a sundial. It is one of the few that survived the Spanish conquest.

  • If you’re arriving at Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, you’ll see Sun Gate. It’s the original entrance to Machu Picchu used by the Incas.
  • If you have previously booked your hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, you will have a different panoramic view of what Machu Picchu is like.

FAQ's About Machu Picchu vacation packages

If you’re planning your next Machu Picchu tour, you probably have a lot of questions about the process. We’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions from our travelers before booking your Machu Picchu Vacation Packages. Here you’ll find some details about the altitude, the best time to travel, and how to get there. Check out our section before making your next trip!

Machu Picchu is located in southern Peru, in the Cusco region, in the Andes mountain range. It is very close to the town of Aguas Calientes, located in the Ollantaytambo district, which is one way to reach Machu Picchu through this small town. If you are coming via the Classic Inca Trail, the entrance will be through Sun Gate, the original entrance to Machu Picchu.

The altitude of Maachu Picchu is 7,972 feet, which in meters would be equivalent to 2,430 meters above sea level. This is lower than that of Cusco (3,400 m), which means it is much more tolerable and altitude sickness is not very common at this altitude.

It’s a given that the best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. Although there are options depending on your availability, you might consider traveling during the months of May to September, when it’s a mid-season and less crowded. The rainy season is from November to March, so the trails may be more slippery or you may see some clouds blocking the view.

There are two ways to get to Machu Picchu: by train or by hike. The fastest way to get to Machu Picchu is by train; these are the only two ways to visit, depending on the tour you take:

By train: You have to take a bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, and then take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. From there, you have to take a bus uphill and in approximately 20 minutes you will be in Machu Picchu. Now, if you travel with a Peru Travel Agency, you won’t have to worry about anything because we will manage all your arrivals. It’s worth mentioning that another train station to get to Aguas Calientes is in Poroy.

By hike: The other way to get to Machu Picchu is if you are doing a Classic Inca Trail hike. Here, you will enter Machu Picchu on the fourth day of the hike through the Sun Gate, which is the official entrance to Machu Picchu. This is included in your Machu Picchu Vacation Package and you will be provided with all the information.

We know that Machu Picchu is at a considerable altitude and it is necessary to acclimatize in Cusco before starting any adventure. The altitude of the city in Cusco is higher than that of Machu Picchu itself, at 2,430 m (7,972 ft). In Cusco, we are at 3,399 m (11,152 ft), which is a bit high, so upon arrival, we recommend that you acclimatize and follow some tips.

Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water every day will help you cope with altitude sickness.

Avoid alcohol and cigarettes: Drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking heavily will contribute to altitude sickness. It is recommended not to consume alcohol until you are acclimatized. Save the drinks for celebrating after the adventure!

Rest and Natural Remedies: Getting plenty of rest for the first two days before starting your trip is important if you are experiencing altitude sickness. The most well-known natural remedy is coca tea, or you can also have chicken soup or light meals.

If you still feel ill, visit a pharmacy in Cusco where they sell medications to help you feel better and help with altitude sickness. If your symptoms are severe, we recommend visiting a health center.

Of course, it’s possible to visit Machu Picchu in a single day. Our Machu Picchu One Day Trip from Cusco is the best option if you’re short on time. This tour includes an early departure from Cusco, a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour, and an evening return.

Depending on whether you’re taking a Machu Picchu day trip from Cusco or hiking a longer trek, it’s important to know what you need to bring to Machu Picchu. Here’s a quick guide to help you.

Clothing: If you’re doing a hike like the Classic Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek, it’s important to pack lightweight, trekking-grade clothing. If you’re staying overnight in Aguas Calientes, remember to bring a change of clothes for the next day. If you’re traveling during the rainy season, a raincoat and jacket wouldn’t hurt. If you’re going on a Machu Picchu day trip, pack only the essentials. If you’re traveling during the rainy season, remember to bring a poncho or raincoat, comfortable clothing for the hike, pants, and long-sleeved shirts.

Shoes: If you are going hiking or trekking, you will undoubtedly need good trekking shoes. If you are only going to Machu Picchu for a day, you will only need good, comfortable shoes for your photos. Be prepared with good shoes in case you go during the rainy season.

Backpack: Whether you’re hiking or just going to Machu Picchu by train, you’ll need to bring only the essentials. If you’re hiking, pack your clothes for every day you’ll be hiking, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, extra batteries, and something to protect yourself from the cold at night and the heat in the morning. If you’re going to Machu Picchu for just one day, remember to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a power bank, and, if you have one, a camera to take spectacular photos.

Hat and sunscreen: Depending on the season, the sun can be very intense in Machu Picchu. It is important to wear a hat and sunscreen to protect your face.

Extras: Remember it is very important that you bring your passport, to enter Machu Picchu there will be a verification, you can also bring your entrance tickets printed or show them on your cell phone, bring extra cash in soles to do some shopping in Aguas Calientes or eat something, after the day tour you will be hungry, mosquito repellent and do not forget to bring your camera, cell phone for those unforgettable photos.

If you’re in Cusco and want to acclimatize gradually or do a more intense hike, these are the day tours we recommend before heading to Machu Picchu.

Cusco City Tour: This tour is a very popular option that will show you the best spots in Cusco. We’ll get to see the Plaza de Armas, the Qoricancha Museum, Sacsayhuaman, and much more. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to explore Cusco in a single day.

Super Sacred Valley: This grand tour will take you to the main attractions of the Sacred Valley in a single day. You’ll visit Chinchero, the salt mines, Maras Moray, and more, all with a buffet lunch included.

Rainbow Mountain: If you’re in better physical condition and aren’t as affected by altitude sickness, you can hike the Rainbow Mountain, a spectacular spot with picturesque views and colorful mountains—an adventure you’ll definitely love if you enjoy colorful views.

Humantay Lake: This day tour offers an excellent view of a turquoise lagoon. It’s a bit more challenging than Rainbow Mountain, so you’ll need to be careful with acclimatization. The climb is steep, but the rewards are very gratifying.
