Inca Trail Tips and Recommendations

Planning to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu? You’ll likely need plenty of advice; preparation is key. Here are our best tips and recommendations so you can enjoy the best hike in Peru to the fullest.

  • The Inca Trail Hike isn’t extremely difficult. However, you should spend at least two days in Cusco to acclimatize. During this time, we recommend hiking around the city, doing some basic exercise, and acclimatizing to altitude sickness.
  • Permits for the Classic Inca Trail are limited to 500 people per day and sell out months in advance. Book at least four months in advance, especially during the off-season, with a trusted local operator. The Short Inca Trail has more availability, but always make sure to book ahead.
  • Follow a strict packing list provided by your agency. Ask for it and research it on blogs. Remember that you can bring your backpack and a duffle bag, which will be carried by the porters.
  • We strongly recommend using trekking poles. There are steep descents to overcome, and it will be very difficult without them. Rent them when you go on your tour or bring your own.
  • Let us know any questions or concerns you may have. Take it easy during the trek; remember it’s not a race. Connect with nature and be very respectful of the trail and your guide’s recommendations. If you need anything, just ask!
  • Choose the right season to travel. Remember that Inca Trail Tours are very busy during the dry season, especially from May to October. During the rainy season, it’s usually less crowded, but be prepared for rain. Remember that it’s closed in February!

FAQ's About Inca Trail Tours

When planning a world-famous hike like the Inca Trail, many questions arise. Whether you’re taking the 2-day Inca Trail or the 4-day Classic, you should have many questions about everything to ensure your trip is as unforgettable as possible. In this section, we’ll answer the most common questions travelers ask when hiking the Inca Trail.

If you’re hiking the Classic Inca Trail in 4 days, you should know that the entire distance is 26 miles (42 km). The Short Inca Trail is around 8 miles (13 km) and takes two days.

Hike the Inca Trail is considered moderate to challenging. It includes steep climbs and altitudes of up to 4,215 m (13,828 ft). However, this is only for the first few days, as the hike begins with a descent, making it moderate. Don’t worry, remember that many hikers can complete it.

The dry season (April to October) is the most popular season for travelers because the trail is easier and less rainy. The sky is much clearer, making the views and photos more enjoyable. It’s peak season, so you’ll want to reserve your spot early. The Inca Trail is closed in February. The rainy season (November to March) is the most affordable and least crowded, but it tends to be a bit more challenging due to the rain. However, you can see a lot of flora during this time, making it an incredible hike.

Yes, Inca Trail permits are required and are only issued to authorized tour operators, and we are one of them! Sport permits are very limited and often sell out months in advance, especially during peak season.

The best thing about our tours is that they include everything: professional guides who will ensure you have a super experience, porters who will carry your duffle bag so you can stay comfortable with your backpack, meals, basic camping gear, and admission to the great Machu Picchu and your return to Cusco. We make your trek unforgettable.

No. Some treks like the Salkantay trek can still be done on your own, but the Inca Trail has been prohibited since 2001 by the Peruvian government. Only authorized local tour operators can do this trek, and Marfes Tours Peru is one of them.

Remember that on some hikes, like the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, there are porters who carry a canvas bag that can hold up to 7 kg. We recommend packing your camping gear, such as a change of clothes, sleeping bags, and rain gear, in this bag. This is because you’ll be carrying your 30- to 40-liter backpack, which you’ll be using throughout the hike. In this backpack, pack trekking essentials like your refillable water bottle, small snacks, sunscreen, toothpaste, sunglasses, power banks, and the main items you’ll be using.

Via Marfes Tours Peru, we offer two types of Inca Trail Packages:

  • Classic Inca Trail (US$700)
  • Short Inca Trail (US$470)

We know the Inca Trail is the most popular, but Cusco offers different types of treks if the Inca Trail permits are exhausted. The closest is the Salkantay Trek. It’s more challenging than the Inca Trail because it’s a 5-day, 4-night tour, the distance is much longer, but the reward is the views of the glaciers are beautiful. There’s also the Lares Trek, a culturally rich hike, ideal for those who want to experience the Inca culture to the fullest. You’ll visit different villages and learn about their customs. The Inca Jungle is the most exciting route, ideal for adventure lovers. All of these treks lead to Machu Picchu. There are also alternatives, such as Choquequirao, Machu Picchu’s twin sister.

Yes, it’s advisable to bring money. We’ll be mostly in Aguas Calientes on the last day, so you’ll have a little time to shop and eat something before returning to Cusco, or if you’d like, visit the city’s hot springs.
